The power of bioconversion through a tiny insect
E Farm Biotech is dedicated to transforming food waste into valuable resources using Black Soldier Fly technology, contributing to a sustainable future for Hong Kong.
From farm experiments to a biotech enterprise
As early as 2018, before establishing the BSF facility, the team had already been experimenting at E Farm in Hok Tau, Fanling — testing how to build a sustainable eco-farm combining insects, fish, and vegetables. Beyond crop production, the farm also served as an education centre demonstrating and promoting food waste recycling.
Drawing on years of farming experience and research from international breeding partners, we founded E Farm Biotech — a company dedicated to Black Soldier Fly technology, focusing on food waste conversion and finding new outlets for misallocated resources. We continue to monitor this emerging industry while recycling as much organic waste as possible.
Hong Kong generates 3,300 tonnes of food waste daily — equivalent to the weight of 250 double-decker buses. While existing recycling centres convert food waste to energy, they only serve commercial and industrial producers The remaining 70% of household food waste currently has no outlet.

The E Farm Biotech project operates from a nearly 10,000 sqft facility in Sheung Shui. Site preparation is progressing on schedule, and the project has been approved by the Recycling Fund. We aim to build Hong Kong's most efficient food waste conversion centre, providing a viable outlet for the city's organic waste.
We are committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, embedding environmental awareness in every aspect of our business
Through our BSF closed-loop system, converting waste food into high-value biological resources.
Dramatically reducing methane from rotting food waste, lowering the carbon footprint of local agriculture.
Replacing fishmeal with insect protein to reduce overfishing and protect marine ecosystems.
Developing high-quality organic fertilisers to improve soil fertility and promote sustainable local farming.

We were delighted to host Day and Siumai at our Sheung Shui facility! Siumai, who majored in environmental conservation, led viewers through the prospects of Hong Kong's food waste recycling. Under founder Ka-ming's guidance, we explored how BSF upcycles food waste. This is not just a tech tour, but a record of young people's passion for dreams and sustainability.
